WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY

With the help and support of the Institute for public health of Serbia “Dr Milan Jovanovic Batut” and the Office for tobacco control, IFMSA Serbia actively participated in this year’s action to mark World no tobacco day.

The first part of the manifestation was a walk from Kalemegdan to the Republic Square during which we passed out promo material and invited our fellow citizens to join us in the fight against tobacco smoke. The second part was at the Republic Square itself, and IFMSA Serbia was present with our stand. Many passers-by could at this point get information about tobacco smoke and all of its bad effects at human health. They could talk to our volunteers, fill out a questioneer about tobacco smoke exposure and give their suggestions for signs to be posted on the packs of cigarettes. We had some very interesting suggestions, some of which are: "Price=100€", "Smoking or a trip around the world? Average smoker smokes 1 plane ticket to Australia a year", "Tobacco is the greatest evil! He who smokes has no happiness", "Extreme poison, destroys everything", "If you love your children, friends, neighbors...Quit smoking"

Standing Committee On Public Health from Belgrade continues educating medical students on substance abuse and addiction! Thanks to collaboration with Institute of Epidemiology, we conducted six workshops which were implemented in regular classes on this subject. That way we educated nearly 140 students who are in their second study year. The students found the topic extremely hot and interesting, which made the workshops very dynamic. Through discussion, talks and funny games we provided information about cocaine, heroin, ecstasy, LSD, marijuana and also about alcoholism. The majority of students involved agreed they would like more of such workshops in the future and nobody was disappointed with the methodology we used. In the end we introduced them with the IFMSA-Serbia and invited all the interested participants to join our team.

In the SCOPH team of educators were Mirjana Spasojević, Maja Tošić, Tijana Ralić, Sanja Rsovac, Milica Radović and Bojan Sekereš.

YuMSIC SCOPH team put in a great effort to celebrate April 7 – World Health Day. In Belgrade with cooperation of Mercator Roda Hipermarket, an event was organized in which we had our fellow citizens’ height and weight measured, calculated their BMI (Body Mass Index), and checked their blood pressure. We also talked to them about their existing health problems. A poll was taken, and it showed us that unfortunately, a working man has too many responsibilities, and accumulated stress, so he seeks refuge in cigarettes, numerous cups of coffee, and has no time to dedicate to any physical exercise or to eat healthy. Giving out apples and advice, we hope that we managed to at least nudge Belgrade’s citizens toward thinking about new, healthier lifestyle.

With the ending of the previous year, YuMSIC has celebrated its 55th birthday! From 27-29th December, LC Belgrade hosted colleagues and friends from the ex-yugoslav republics as well as the ones from LC Nis, Novi Sad and Kragujevac and celebrated with them this significant anniversary. In a City Hall, where the small presentation of Yumsic was held, gathered current and former yumsic members as well as people who value our work, and who have been our support and inspiration throughout the years. We are especially proud that on behalf of the Faculty, we were addressed by Prof. Nebojsa Lalic. Representatives of the City were also present, and they had the opportunity to hear more about the organization, its history and successes. Through photos, talks and time spent together we remembered all of the events we organized and participated in and made a wish for Yumsic to last for at least another 55 years.
