IMPRESSIONS of students who visited Serbia

SUMMER 2007. (Belgrade):

--- Holger Joswig (Germany):
I chose Serbia for exchange because I had traveled to this country previously in 2004 and I decided to it visit again - I was not dissappointed. The time I spent in Belgrade was tremendous! I am amazed by the locals' great hospitality and all those parties I remember (or not remember). Getting to know very many people from IFMSA-Serbia quickly, I had the chance to visit other places in Serbia such as Novi Sad or Negotin as well as the surrounding sites of Belgrade.
My rotation in Anaesthesiology was excellent! In hospital I was allowed to do almost everything I asked for. I thank all the doctors and nurses from my department and I thank all the people from IFMSA-Serbia for the thrilling time I had! I would chose Serbia again!
--- Epp Kivistik, Tartu (Estonia):
When I first arrived in Serbia, I was a bit disappointed, because i didn't know I'm going to be the only exchange student in Belgrade in June. So, instead of living with a bunch of foreign students in a dormitory i was living in an appartment with two Serbian girls - a medical student and her sister. They were so nice and took very good care of me.
I had the practice in the department of plastic surgery. It was kind of funny because nobody cared what time I went there and what time I left or if i went there at all. Most of the doctors and nurses were very nice, even if they didnt speak any English:)
Maybe it would have been more fun if I was there in July or August with all those other exchange students, because in June the Serbian students had exams and sometimes they didn't have time to party or to do anything with me. But actually I have to say there were plenty of parties were I had a lot of fun. And Serbian guys are really cute and crazy:)

SUMMER 2006. (Belgrade & Nis):

--- Ali Sigaroudi, Cologne (Germany):
When I arrived at the airport of Belgrade in September, Milica, my hostess, picked me up and we drove back by bus to her apartment. Milica, a nice medical student lives together with her friendly siter Ksenia, a veterinary medicine student in an apartment in the center of Belgrade . The next day at noon , we went to the neurology institute and met Milica Brkic, the NORE of Serbia. The whole work in the first 2 weeks consisted of morning visits in which we observed all patients in the department with frontal lobes dysfunction In the 3rd week I changed to the department of brain vascular diseases. There, I was introduced in CT and Ultrasonography, and the doctors explained me very many things and took care of me. The last week I went to the neurosurgery department and watched some neurosurgical impacts like: replacement of the dura mater by taking the fascia lata from the leg; removing a tumor in the left cerebellar lobe.
I worked in the institute from 10 am until 2pm and it was very relaxed. In the neurosurgical department I had to be there at 8 am. In general the serbian people are very polite, helpful and friendly. We visited a city called Nis in the south of Serbia . The Serbs eat much pork and drink much joghurt. They drink joghurt as if it is water. I can only recommend the bakeries. Some are open even 24 hours a day. In Belgrade it is cheaper than in Germany . In the discotheques are no clothe rules and the atmosphere inside is much more relaxed than in Germany. Belgrade is a nice city but nothing more, there are not so many things to see what would be new for german eyes. I think it is not comparable to other european capitals like Berlin , Amsterdam or London . Most of the young people can speak English but with the older generations it is difficult to communicate.
p.s. In Belgrade you can nearly make photos of everything except the American and Isreli embassy. I didn't see the board on which it was written that it is forbidden, and I took pictures of the American embassy, they took me with themselves, questioned me and copy my passport. They told me that I am allowed to make pictures of every embassy except the American and Israeli embassy. So the fear of terrorists is everywhere, even in Belgrade .

SUMMER 2006. (Belgrade):

--- Silvana Stoimenova (Macedonia):
My stay in Bg was incredibile. There I met very interesenting and lovely people from Bg and from  all over the world. I miss them a lot and I think of them all the time and I want to meet them somewhere again...Belgrade is a great city with very nice architecture. It’s a very nice place to visit, especially places like Kalemegdan, sailing on the rivers , swiming on Ada  and when I was on practise in the Clinical Center ...In Belgrade you needn’t go to sleep; simply because the city is giving you the energy and desire to come again.

--- Mario Enrique Garza (Mexico):
Hi Belgrade!
My practise in the hospital was really good! The doctors are very friendly and they explain me very well all the things they do. The city is very nice because you have fun and nightlife every day. And you have a lot of beautiful places to visit where you can walk and relax.
Thank you so much!
--- Roberto de Jesús Zuart (Mexico):
I like Belgrade very much!! Thank you for everything. My practise was great. The doctors were excellent… I learnt a lot about cardio-thoracic surgery. Thank you dr Mikic, dr Putnik, and dr Dalton. The nightlife is great as well. What I really like about Belgrade is how nice the people are. Greetings from Mexico. I hope we will meet again in Chiapas!
PS. Kisses and hugs to Milica!
--- Daniel Gonzalez Gaytan (Mexico):
I have been so happy in this country. Really, all the people here are so kind. The hospital is great, all the doctors are wonderful. All the time they were trying to explain me everything. I feel at home, absolutely. Belgrade is a nice place. I was so surprised. If I have a chance to come back again I will. Thank you a lot!

--- Elena Gineli (Italy):
My practise was great...Really I didn't expect it would be like that. Everybody was nice with me, the city too, was a surprise and in the hospital I was very lucky because the professor and the other doctors explained me everything.
The only thing I complain about is that it was too hot...but nobody’s to blame!
and what about the social program? Yes it was interesting , but it was a pity because I couldn’t go to Novi Sad....I arrived too late and I came back too early!!!
And I liked the “Nikola Tesla museum”...It's nice.
And of course now I have friends everywhere in the world! I think it's worth to do it again!!
kisses-kisses
--- Paola Chamocho Lloro (Spain):
The practise on the endocrinology department was a bit boring, but when I went to the paediatrics, it was fantastic. I learnt a lot.
About social program, I think we were lucky because in other countries they don’t have as good social program as in Belgrade, we visited museums, churches, Kalemegdan, Novi Sad...and I was on Zlatibor with you! It was great!!
About the people in Belgrade.. the people are the best, everybody was kind, friendly and polite with me, everywhere in the hospital, people from yumsic like you....and now I have a lot of new friends from different places in the world.
a lot of kisses!!
--- Vitor de Sousa Medeiros (Brazil):
I just have good things to say about my practise in Belgrade...
We learnt a lot of things in the hospital. The doctors were so kind, they explained every step that they took.
About the people and the social program, I don´t have words to describe...everything was so organized and everybody was ready to help us anytime and of course, to have fun with us!
I didn’t forget to tell somehting about the city. They showed us the most beautiful places in Belgrade. It was amazing...I liked it a lot

SUMMER 2006. (Kragujevac):

--- Erica (Italy):
In Kragujevac I didn't have any problems, everybody was polite with me, in the hospital also. I liked very much the city, our weekend in Belgrade. The dorm was nice, the food was not bad. In the hospital doctor Violeta tried to help and to show me intersting things. So I loved very much my trip to Serbia..really! In fact I want to come back...

--- Michele (Italy):
I really enjoyed my trip in kraguyevac, cause I've visited a beatiful and original country and I really spent my time like a typical Serbian guy...the hospital experience was great...doc.Boban taught me a lot of things and left me do many things on my own...I liked it really so much. The capital...the trip to Belgrade was beatiful and I liked so much all the monuments that I've seen...the only negative thinge that I noticed was...the food! Please, don't hate me, but I like so much Italian food and I don't like any kind of foreign food....I'm also very happy for the guys
who I met and I really hope to see them again..

THIS IS HOW IT WAS IN KRAGUJEVAC IN SUMMER 2005:
--- Nicholas (Italy):
I just want you to know how beautiful this month was for me, both in hospital and on our trips, the crazy nights we spent, with crazy boys and crazy girls as you are. It was really nice to meet you and I will keep the memory of the reception, friendly behavior of the Serbian people. I will tell everyone about the beauty of your people and cities.
In Italy we say that “home” is where you keep some affections and I think I’ve found them here, so I will leave from this house to go to another house of mine. I think that I can say that I found friends here and not only companions and adventure. I will take with me a little piece of Serbia.
I hope to see you soon again, because Italy is near and you are all invited.
Hugs and don’t forget me!
PS. I want to say only another thing…cevapcici!!!!
June, 2005.

--- Alan Servando Gonzalez Ponce (Mexico):
Ok…some words about Belgrade. Let me see…mmm…mmm…Oh, I know something! The people from Belgrade are really cool, just like in Mexico and I like that you have a really good organization in YuMSIC, and you take really good care about the students and, well, of course…the Serbian girls WOW!!!
So, this was a great month, I made lots of great (relationships) friends. I hope you’re not mad with us, cause we’re always late and that you enjoyed this month as much as we did.

--- Sadot Matagarza (Mexico):
I think Belgrade is one of the best cities in Europe to have fun. The people here are so nice, especially the people of medicine and the city too. I like your history, your culture and a lot of things.
And the best of Belgrade are the girls

--- Hanna Edström (Finland):
It was nice. People are very nice and want to take good care of foreigners. The weather is warm. The doctors at the clinic are nice and explain things in English. The city is beautiful.

--- David Torres Garcia (Mexico):
Good! I feel so comfortable here, actually more than I thought.
I like the girls.
I like hospitality of YuMSIC
I like the Kalemegdan
And the food from Rifat I don’t like

--- Raúl Sosa (Mexico):
The people were really kind
Great food.
Beautiful women.

April, 2005.

--- Sergio Stavros Garza Caballero (Mexico):
"Well I don’t know how to start this, but since we where in Mexico, we were trying to guess how Serbia would be like and then when we got here, it was completely different. This city is great, our guests were so nice with us, they feed us very well ( I mean, about the food)!! And we were very comfortable in their places.
About the hospital, sometimes it was hard cause not everybody speaks English, but our professor does, so we saw a lot of endoscopies and gastro stuff.
The people here are awesome, they are so friendly and kind, so we had a great time here in Belgrade."

--- Alejandro Solis Kuri (Mexico):

Host Dragan: Being a host to a foreign student on the exchange program was for me a completely new experience. I like to meet new people, in general, and of course I like meeting end talking to foreigners. People from abroad usually don’t know very much about my country and for those who want to learn something about it, every story and every site is some kind of a revelation.
At first I was pretty much concerned about being able to financially support this whole little ‘mission’, but then I realized that this was an opportunity for myself also to see some places I have never been and to remember the stories I have long forgotten. I have also had a chance to meet many new interesting people from Belgrade. And what’s most important, I’ve had best fun in my life, and it was worth every penny!
There is actually one bad thing about being a host – you get used to your guest. You become friends. But in a month your friend is gone and you start to miss him/her. Well, it all ends with promises that you will see each other some day, maybe here, maybe in his/hers country. Who knows – the world isn’t that big after all!
