About us
IFMSA-Serbia (YuMSIC) is a full member of the IFMSA( International Federation of Medical Students’ Organization) . IFMSA started to work in 1951 as a non-governmental, non-profit and non-political organization aimed at advancing international cooperation between students of medicine all over the world. Today IFMSA has more than a million members, students of medicine from 100 member countries from six continents. In 1953, YuMSIC became a full member of IFMSA, so that today it is one of the oldest members of IFMSA. This year, YuMSIC celebrates its 55th anniversary, which makes this organization one the oldest students’ organizations not only in the Balkans, but also in Europe.
YuMSIC operates through six committees that deal with different areas of international cooperation of medicine students:
- Professional exchange
- Scientific exchange
- Projects and actions in the public health area
- Projects and actions in the reproductive health area
- Following trends in the area of medical education
- Activities related to human rights and peace.
Each committee has a National coordinator, who synchronizes functioning of the committees on both international and national level. On local level (Faculties of Medicine in Belgrade, Novi Sad, Kragujevac and Nis) local coordinators organize activities of the committees and represent a connection between the national coordinator and students in their faculties.
History
IFMSA-Serbia was founded in 1953. And ever since has been a full member of IFMSA. At the beginning the organization was named JORMASMIS, later on it was KMASMIS and did international exchanges only, just like the very IFMSA. Since 90s until 2003. it was called YuMSIC (Yugoslav Medical Students' International Committee), which is the acronym that we still like to use. Until 2005. it was IFMSA-Serbia and Montenegro and since 2005. it has its present title IFMSA-Serbia.
IFMSA-Serbia was the host organization for the IFMSA 51st March General Assembly in 2002. on Kopaonik and IFMSA 55th August General Assembly in 2006. on Zlatibor. So far no other National Member Organization (NMO) in IFMSA has managed to organize such big event twice in only 4 year period.
In 2003 in Bečići, Montenegro, IFMSA-Serbia held a spectacular 50th Founding Anniversary. Numerous NMOs from surrounding countries participated in the celebration as well as many of our eminent professors.
